Recruiters scan timelines. Missing months or years raise more questions than a gap explained briefly. Use real start and end dates for each role.
Ways to frame a gap
If you did contract or freelance work, list it as such. Parental leave, caregiving, health recovery, or full-time study can be noted in one line in the profile or next to the gap — only what you are comfortable sharing.
Productive gap activities (certifications, open-source, volunteer projects) can be a short entry if they support the target role.

What not to do
Do not stretch employment dates to cover gaps. Do not invent freelance clients. Focus the resume on recent, relevant proof once you are back in the market.
